160 students from 32 area school districts will come together to sing at the PMEA District 9 Chorus Festival on Wednesday, January 24 – 26th. Dr. Anthony T. Leach is the Guest Conductor for this event taking place at the Wallenpaupack Area High School Auditorium. Dr. Leach, professor of music/music education is director and founder of Essence of Joy. He served as conductor of the Penn State University Choir from 1994 – 2015 and taught undergraduate and graduate courses in choral music education. Currently Dr. Leach teaches a graduate music education seminar and coordinates the African American Music Festival at Penn State. Leach holds the PhD in music education and the M. M. in conducting from Penn State, and a B.S. in music education from Lebanon Valley College, Annville, PA.
Alexsis Neenan, Choral Director at Wallenpaupack Area High School, is the Host Director. Students audition on Wednesday evening to continue on to Region IV Chorus, and then begin rehearsals at 9am on Thursday morning.
The Chorus Festival will culminate with a concert of varied sacred and secular choral music at 7:00 PM on Friday, January 26th, in the Wallenpaupack Area High School Auditorium. Dr. Leach will conduct a program that includes, “America The Beautiful”, “He Watching Over Israel” from ‘Elijah’ by Felix Mendelssohn, and “Afternoon on a Hill” by Eric Barnum.
Tickets are available at the door and cost $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for students.
